• Start with checking whether your plastic is accepted widely or not. With MasterCard, Visa, or American Express credit card, you don't need to worry. If your plastic is not among the mentioned ones, choose another card that can be used in the country you are going to.
• Beware of fees. Spending with your card abroad, you need to expect new fees. Say, you take out $100 from ATM outside the US, some credit companies will charge you about $5 for the transaction. If you want to avoid paying credit card fees for transactions made abroad, choose the one that charges no foreign fees.
• Check the expiration date and credit limit. Your trip will be spoiled when you suddenly find out that your best credit card has been expired and you are not able to make necessary travel expenses or buy souvenirs being already abroad. Do you need it?
• Inform the bank about your plans. Otherwise, your new location will be flagged and the bank may think that your plastic has been thieved and take necessary measures to protect your account.
• Get the phone number of your bank that functions outside the US because the 800 number works only in the country's territory. Even if you believe that there is no need in available number, do it just to be on the safe side.
• Hide your credit account numbers in an odd corner! You can locate them in a safe or any place protected with a password to be sure that your numbers are secured while you are on vacation.
• Carry your plastic in a hiding place going anywhere abroad. You will be right thinking that credit cards are safer than cold cash but robbery can not be eliminated. Credit cards as well as cash always allure robbers whether you are in your native city or abroad. So, be on your guard!
