Defend Credit Card Deals against Identity Theft - Must-knows for Every Cardholder!

Generally, cardholders believe that identity theft is something that will never happen to them. The very idea that someone steals names, numbers, and passwords sounds a bit queer. Present days, identity theft is not just cheating, it's a serious crime and millions of people suffer from it.

While lenders and cardholders sustain damages, there's little evidence that criminals will be caught. This invisible and low-down crime can ruin your life, not to mention your credit history. Setting a burglar alarm, one protects a house from unexpected visitors. And just like that, every cardholder should guard his or her plastics from unauthorized users. Awareness is the best weapon in fight with credit card fraud, so take your chance to learn more about this problem.

Identity theft has many forms. Fraudsters may make credit card deals in your name, or rent an apartment. Personal data like Social Security Number, your name, or credit card numbers may become crime instruments in the wrong hands.

The thing is, you may not even know that your data have been stolen. And it makes this crime difficult to trace. All the more so, victimized customers may suffer a lot from ID theft, i.e. denied loans, because of information in their credit reports, not to mention financial losses. There are cases, though they're rare, when a person may be arrested for a crime he or she did not commit.

As a rule, ID thieves are pretty young, from 20 to 35. It's no surprise, judging by the fact that young adults are embracing with new technologies more quickly than other age groups. The advances in technology resulted in the appearance of new kinds of crimes, and ID theft is a bright example.

First of all, let's find out how your personal information may be stolen. Your credit card numbers may be stolen with a special storage device while processing your plastic. Nowadays, phishing is an extremely wide-spread credit scam, meaning that crooks try to phish out your personal data pretending to be some lending institutions.

Some ID thieves are not fastidious to rummage through trash dumps searching for papers and documents that contain important information. There are also thieves who steal purses and credit cards, or credit card statements.

It's worth mentioning that credit card companies do their hardest to protect their clients from ID theft. Even if the worst has happened, you may rely on the assistance of credit card issuer. Actually, there are a few methods of credit card protection.

These days, almost all creditors offer a zero liability policy that provides you with protection against unauthorized use of your plastics. This means you don't have to pay out enormous sums of money. Thanks to this policy, you are liable only for a portion of these purchases, not thousands of dollars.

If you decide to make online purchases, virtual credit card numbers are definitely for you. However, if you would like to take drastic measures, credit report freeze is just what you need. Nowadays, three major credit bureaus offer this service for cardholders.

While your lender guards you against unauthorized credit use, there are plenty opportunities for fraudsters to obtain your data. Probably, the best solution of this problem is your awareness and readiness at improving this situation.

Be careful with the documents containing your personal data. You'd better shred credit card statements, pre-approved credit card offers, and other papers with identifying information. Be on guard while using the Internet, though it's a valuable source of information, it represents certain danger for inattentive users.

Good news for American borrowers - this Wednesday major U.S. banks began lowering their prime interest rates in tandem with the Fed fund rate reductions. The prime interest rate has dropped to a four-year low 4.0 percent from 4.50 percent. The prime rate is the most common underlying index for most credit cards and other loans. It means that banks and lending companies can lower interest rates to their best customers. JPMorgan Chase and Bank of America were the first to announce lending rate cuts, other banks are likely to follow this trend.
