Capital One was founded as Capital One Financial Corp. in 1988 by Nigel Morris and Richard Fairbank. That corporation was one of the credit card pioneers in 1990s. Their economic strategy was based on consumers lending, also called "monolines". That business was risky, because it was really remunerative in good times and very unfavorable in bad times. That is why a lot of such companies declared bankruptcy in the last 20 years. A notable fact is that Capital One survived in such hard bank competition during those years.

In 2005 because of the unstable situation in monocline industry Capital One changed to retail banking. They have a unique approach to banking. Capital One won the Wharton Infosys Business Transformation Award in 2002. They deserved this award for leading strategy restricted their credit cards.

Capital One is an international company today; there are headquarters in a number of countries: Canada (Toronto), United Kingdom (Nottingham), and Spain (Madrid). The Bank is also a sponsor of a number of football (soccer) teams in the United States and United Kingdom.

Capital One was the main sponsor for people who wanted to get H-1B visas in 2003. Also they received 100% rating released by the Human Rights Campaign on the Corporate Equality Index the same year. That corporation is also a parental company of Capital One Auto Finance, in Plano, Texas. That company became the main and biggest Internet auto credit company after buying PeopleFirst. At the first time they sold their cars only through auto dealerships and direct mail. Now Capital One Auto Finance lets you get auto loans online. It is a very interesting and useful option for the consumers.
