Credit Card Precautions

Thursday, January 03, 2008

Winter holidays enable you to have free time and go somewhere you wish at least for a short while. Rome, Paris, St. Petersburg, Vienna ... If you are going to take a foreign trip, most probably you will choose a credit card as a form of currency and the safest and convenient way for travel spendings. Will you?

But before living your country, you need to think over all fine points to have a nice trip and get rid of vital problems in full. Therefore we have prepared some safety tips. They will help you make all the necessary preparations to avoid sudden problems concerning credit card usage outside the US.

Well, you need to:

  • Start with checking whether your plastic is accepted widely or not. With MasterCard, Visa, or American Express credit card, you don't need to worry. They are surely acceptable almost worldwide and offer high quality service wherever you are. If your plastic is not among the mentioned ones, choose another card that can be used in the country you are going to.
  • Beware of fees. Spending with your card abroad, you need to expect new fees. Say, you take out $100 from ATM outside the US, some credit companies will charge you about $5 for the transaction. If you want to avoid paying credit card fees for transactions made abroad, choose the one that charges no foreign fees.
  • Check the expiration date and credit limit. Your trip will be spoiled when you suddenly find out that your best credit card has been expired and you are not able to make necessary travel expenses or buy souvenirs being already abroad. Do you need it?
  • Inform the bank about your plans. Otherwise, your new location will be flagged and the bank may think that your plastic has been thieved and take necessary measures to protect your account.
  • Get the phone number of your bank that functions outside the US because the 800 number works only in the country's territory. Even if you believe that there is no need in available number, do it just to be on the safe side.
  • Hide your credit account numbers in an odd corner! You can locate them in a safe or any place protected with a password to be sure that your numbers are secured while you are on vacation.
  • Carry your plastic in a hiding place going anywhere abroad. You will be right thinking that credit cards are safer than cold cash but robbery can not be eliminated. Credit cards as well as cash always allure robbers whether you are in your native city or abroad. So, be on your guard!

Although all travel preparations can fatigue you, these seven weighty precautions are very simple to take. As soon as you include all of them into your plan of holiday preparations, you will go anywhere you wish this holiday season with a light heart. Bon voyage!

With the economic upheaval, obtaining a credit card seems a distant dream, especially if you fail to qualify for any credit card application. Nonetheless, turning into an authorized user, i.e. attaching yourself with a good-quality credit customer`s account and the consent to use it, would boost your credit scores swiftly, and jump start your credit history.
